Floating Upweller System for oyster seed and other shellfish enhancement.
San Diego Bay Aquaculture, founded in 2017, is part of the Port of San Diego‘s public/private partnership “Blue Economy” initiatives. Its purpose makes use of a floating upweller system–a FLUPSY–as an incubator to grow seed oysters and other bivalves to a juvenile stage in the warm, nutrient-rich waters of San Diego Bay, naturally accelerating shellfish seed growth.
Housed in screened aluminum bins that allow fresh bay water to flow through on a continuous basis with the help from a paddle wheel, this ensures an abundance of available food for the oysters to consume and thrive. Arriving at 1-3 mm, the oysters can reach approximately 20 mm in 10 weeks, ready for planting at shellfish aquaculture farms on the West Coast, including Mexico. Planting out at this larger size speeds up the process of obtaining marketable oysters by 6 months to 1 year.
Why plant small shellfish seed when you can plant juveniles and gain on grow-out time and sales?
